Sump pumps — test before the first big storm

Make sure your sump pumps are working, and test them before the first big storm. A pump that sits unused for months can fail when you need it most. A quick check now is far better than water damage later.

Heaters — include them in your service checks

Include your heaters in your service checks so everything is operable before you need it. Waiting until a cold night to discover a problem leaves you with fewer options.

Electric floor heaters and 20-amp circuits

If you'll be using electric floor heaters, have their circuits checked, including proper 20-amp circuits where required by the heater's specifications. Never simply install a larger breaker on existing wiring.

That does not mean every 15-amp circuit is unsafe. The point is to match the circuit, wiring, and outlets to what the heater is designed for — and not to “solve” a trip by swapping in a bigger breaker.

Heater & circuit fire warning

Space-heater fires happen every year. Plugging a heater into an overloaded 15-amp circuit, or using wiring or outlets that aren't rated for the load, can cause overheating and fire. A 20-amp breaker must never be installed on wiring that isn't rated for it.

Winter loads and your electrical panel

Winter heating and other electrical loads can bring out panel overheating, breakers tripping, and loose connections. I recommend having your panel professionally serviced at least once a year, no matter what type you have, to check for overheating, loose screws and connections, and issues with neutrals, bonds, and grounds. Don't ignore repeated breaker trips or signs of overheating.

That yearly check is useful whether your panel is newer or older — the loads of a cold, rainy season still put stress on connections and breakers.
