Old Sylvania Panel Replacement in the East Bay

Did a home inspection or renewal notice call out your Sylvania, GTE-Sylvania or Sylvania-Zinsco panel? An insurance-flagged Sylvania panel usually means the carrier wants it gone before they'll write or renew your policy. AC3 LLC swaps these old panels for new, permitted equipment throughout the East Bay and West Contra Costa.

Why Insurers Reject Sylvania Panels

The Sylvania name on the door can be misleading. Sylvania took over Zinsco's panel designs and sold them under the Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania labels, so many of these panels are Zinsco equipment with a different badge. They carry the same weak point: breakers that clip onto an aluminum bus bar. Over time that connection can loosen, overheat and arc, and a breaker can end up fused to the bus. A fused breaker may not trip during an overload or short circuit, which defeats the whole purpose of having it.

Because the problem sits inside the panel and isn't something a homeowner can see or fix, insurers tend to flag the brand on sight rather than judge each panel individually. Swapping out individual breakers doesn't solve it; the panel itself needs to be replaced.

Have a panel stamped Zinsco instead? Our Zinsco panel replacement page covers the same process for those panels.

What We Do

  1. Come out, confirm what panel you have, and give you a clear written quote.
  2. Pull the permit with your city.
  3. Handle all the electrical work inside your home, from the bottom of the meter in.
  4. Remove the Sylvania panel and install a modern 200-amp panel.
  5. Move your circuits over and label every one.
  6. Pass final inspection and get your power back on, with paperwork you can send to your insurer.

When an insurance deadline is tight, ask about expedited scheduling. We'll do our best to fit the job in before your coverage date.

Sylvania Panel FAQ

Is a Sylvania panel the same as a Zinsco panel?

In most cases, yes. Sylvania took over Zinsco's panel designs and sold them under the Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania names, so these panels share the same aluminum bus and breaker design and the same known problems. Insurers generally treat them the same way.

Will my insurer accept a new panel?

A permitted panel replacement that passes final city inspection is what carriers typically ask for. Every insurer sets its own rules, so check with your agent about what paperwork they need. We give you the permit and inspection records to send them.

Do I need a permit to replace a Sylvania panel?

Yes. Panel replacement requires a permit and a final inspection from your city. AC3 LLC pulls the permit and handles the inspection for you.

How long does a Sylvania panel replacement take?

The timeline depends mostly on permit approval and inspection scheduling in your city. We'll give you a realistic timeline with your written quote, and we offer expedited scheduling when an insurance deadline is tight.
